Hoisting with David Brock's Petard: The Impervious New Right and the Dying Old Kings

Saul Alinksy popularized the technique as Rule #13 [*1]. But David Brock of Media Matters perfected it [*2]. The modern iteration. (1) Find a controversial act, statement, or quote by a single flesh and blood human enemy. (2) Publicize the aforementioned in an isolated context that, by itself, elicits contempt toward the target. (3) Wait for the gaggle of leftist media arms [*3] in the mainstream to report it. (4) Contact the sponsors of and/or advertisers on the target enemy and ask them to disavow by pulling their association. (5) If they do not, veil a threat of a redirected reprise toward them of step (3). And voila. The resources to sustain the platform (and perhaps even the platform itself) for the enemy to sway the public is destroyed, which was the real goal all along.

They used it on Glenn Beck [*4] (and look at the cheeto king now [*5]). They used it on Rush Limbaugh [*6]. They used it on Bill O'Reilly [*7]. The technique isn't reserved for millionaires with f-u money. Even rodeo clowns are not immune [*8]. They're currently attempting it on Sean Hannity [*9], the captain of the (currently sinking) cable vessel on the right. And Tucker Carlson is assuredly next.

It's not just the mainstream right they throw this proverbial petard upon. Milo Yiannopolous [*10]. Stefan Molyneux [*11]. Stephen Crowder [*12]. Mike Cernovich [*13]. Gavin McInness [*14]. Vox Day [*15]. And these (among many more) are the real targets the left is (and should be) afraid of. Many normies haven't heard of them (for now). But millions have [*16]. These are the fastest growing voices on the right (and worrying the left) [*17]. And especially among the younger generation who, it turns out, is the most conservative since World War 2 [*18].

The trained archer knows to aim where he thinks his mark is moving. But the old arrows no longer have the same impact. The new right media has largely moved to a viewer funded model. Traditional advertisers are decreasingly relevant in funding the discussion. And with less advertisers (or none) to shame away, how do they defund their enemies?

FNC and Talk Radio are the last vestiges on the right of the old advertiser funded model. And those vestiges are decreasingly relevant, mediums preferred by older (often 65+) demographics as the left enjoys taunting us about [*19].

But advertisers need a piper to pay. Preferably with a growing audience. Ironically, the old media outlets that once dominated the political narrative for the left are becoming the only vessel subject to the very technique perfected by Brock [*20].

Imagine a game of ancient naval combat. The left is trying to burn the wooden enemy vessels with greek fire (napalm) by setting the waters ablaze. Increasingly, their enemy's newer model ships are steel. But almost all of their own vessels are still wood. And some of those vessels will take collateral damage. The captains of the wooden vessels on the right thought greek fire was beneath them, akin to generals of the civil war refusing guerrilla tactics. Pass the smelling salts at the thought. The captains of the steel vessels and, more importantly, their crew aren't afraid of throwing the napalm right back.

Enter Kathy Griffin who thought publically brandishing a bloodied effigy of President Trump's head exactly like an ISIS terrorist propaganda video would gain her points with the leftist circle jerk of the mainstream narrative entertain industry [*21]. Oops [*22]. Just like with any figure on the right subject to a social justice attack, apology is not enough [*23]. Blood in the water. The advertisers must disavow CNN who employed her. Griffin countered by crybullying [*24]. Even if the public doesn't know her estimated net worth is $20 million [*25], they intrinsically understand she isn't financially akin to the rodeo clown CNN went after. Griffin hardly seems like a victim worthy of pity, especially compared to CNN's rodeo clown jihad.

Griffin is just the beginning. Any time a leftist public figure slips up, the new right is employing Alinksy's infamous Rule #13. It will be fascinating to watch as the left's fleet of wooden vessels drift into waters ablaze with their own technique. The new right media is impervious to the advertiser boycott game. The left's media arms are increasingly becoming the only medium susceptible to the form of attack they introduced and popularized. Hoisted with their own petard.
